Top 10 Tips for Interior Design

  1. Get rid of any unnecessary clutter. A clean and uncluttered space is so much more appealing and relaxing to be in.
  2. Use area rugs to divide a large room and create smaller defined groupings. This works especially well if you have an open floor plan where dining and living area are one large space. Area rugs create boundaries that can make one large room feel like two.
  3. Use neutrals. Keep your walls and large furniture items a neutral color and use accessories to create your color scheme. If you enjoy redecorating every year or so, all you need to do is change your accessories.
  4. Let art be your inspiration. Find a painting that you love and use it as your focal point. Pull colors from the painting for your room’s color scheme.
  5. Use layers of lighting. An overhead light will provide general room lighting, while accent lighting will place focus on objects and areas within a room. Task lighting provides light for reading, hobbies, certain kitchen chores and other close-up projects.
  6. Arrange furniture in small conversational groupings. Even in a small room, the addition of a couple of upholstered chairs with an accent table arranged in a corner can look warm and inviting.
  7. Layer window treatments for a luxurious look. You can also have better control of room lighting with layers. Use blinds or shades topped with sheers and draperies. Puddle draperies on the floor for an added touch of opulence.
  8. Use slip covers. With just a couple of sets of quality mix and match slip covers you can have several looks. Or buy seasonal sets for winter and summer. The newer slip covers fit and look great. They’ll also protect your furniture against the ravages of kids and pets.
  9. Hang mirrors to make a room feel larger and bring in additional light. Just make sure that the mirrors reflect something more than the ceiling. You may need to angle them down slightly to reflect a windowed wall or another part of the room.
  10. Add plants. Green plants add the finishing touch to any room. Make sure the room has adequate natural lighting for the plants you choose or use individual plant grow lights.
